While the pipers get the glory for the tunes, the bass drummer is the undisputed leader of the band’s pulse. Often referred to as the “metronome,” the bass drum provides the steady, thumping foundation that every other musician relies on. If the bass drum slows down or speeds up, the entire band follows—which is why it takes a steady hand and a great sense of rhythm to wear the big drum.
In the North Shore Highlanders, our bass drummer does more than just hit the beat. They provide the “dynamics,” adding soft touches during quiet sets and powerful strikes during a grand finale. When we’re marching through the streets of Port Dover, that deep bass sound echoes off the buildings, letting everyone know the Highlanders are officially on the move. It’s a physical job that requires a lot of stamina, especially during a long parade!
We like to think of the bass drum as the heartbeat of our community. It’s the sound that gets your feet tapping and your heart racing. Whether we’re playing a solemn lament or a high-energy jig, the bass drum is there to ground us and keep the spirit of Norfolk County moving forward in perfect time.
