Winter Storms & Summer Parades: Practicing Year-Round

Being a pipe band in Port Dover means dealing with the extremes of Ontario weather. During the summer, we’re out in the heat, marching in parades and performing at the beach. But when the Lake Erie winds start to howl and the snow piles up, we don’t just put the pipes away. Winter is our “growing season,” where we learn new repertoire and refine our technique indoors.

Our winter practices at the Port Dover Legion are where the real work happens. Without the pressure of a weekly parade, we can focus on the technical details of new tunes and welcome new students into the fold. It’s a cozy way to spend a cold Tuesday night—surrounded by friends, the smell of pipe seasoning, and the steady drone of the practice chanter.

By the time spring rolls around, we’re itching to get back outside. The transition from the warm practice room to the crisp spring air can be a challenge for our instruments, but we’re used to the Norfolk County climate. We take pride in being a year-round organization that stays active and connected, no matter what the thermometer says.
