The 48th Highlanders Connection: Ontario’s Piping Roots

While the North Shore Highlanders are a local community band, we owe a lot to the great military bands of Ontario, like the 48th Highlanders of Canada. These regiments set the standard for piping and drumming in North America, and many of our members have been inspired by their precision and musicality. Their influence can be heard in the way we tune our pipes and the style of marches we choose.

Ontario has one of the highest concentrations of pipe bands in the world, and that’s largely due to the “piping schools” and regimental traditions founded in cities like Toronto and Hamilton. We take those professional standards and bring them home to Port Dover, striving to give our community a band that can hold its own against the best in the province.

Being a “civilian” band allows us to be a bit more casual and community-focused, but we never lose sight of the military discipline that defines our art form. When we put on our uniforms and march through Port Dover, we are honoring a long line of Canadian Highlanders who proved that this music is a vital part of our national identity.
