The “MSR”: Decoding the Competition Format

In the pipe band world, the “MSR” is the ultimate test of skill. It stands for March, Strathspey, and Reel. These are three distinct types of Scottish tunes played back-to-back without a break. The March is steady and powerful, the Strathspey is bouncy and “snappy,” and the Reel is fast and flowing. For a band in Port Dover, mastering the transitions between these three rhythms is a major goal.

Each tune type requires a different “feel.” In a Strathspey, for example, the pipers have to emphasize short, sharp notes called “Scotch snaps,” while the drummers have to play with incredible precision to keep the beat from dragging. Moving from a controlled march into a high-speed reel is like shifting a car into fifth gear—it’s exhilarating when it goes right!

Even if you aren’t a musician, you can hear the difference when the North Shore Highlanders play an MSR set. The energy in the room (or the park) shifts with every tune. We spend months perfecting these sets for our Port Dover audience and for the judges at Highland Games across Ontario. It’s the “gold standard” of our repertoire.
