Highland Games 101: What to Expect

If you’ve lived in Port Dover for a while but have never been to a Highland Games, you’re missing out on a spectacular experience. These festivals are like a “Scottish Olympics,” featuring everything from heavy lifting (caber tossing) to Highland dancing and, of course, massive pipe band competitions. It’s a day of sights, sounds, and smells (mostly meat pies and wood smoke).

When the North Shore Highlanders go to a “Games,” we spend the whole day in “the circle.” We warm up, compete in front of a panel of judges, and then join hundreds of other pipers for the “Massed Bands” finale. It is an incredible feeling to be part of a 500-person band all playing the same tune at the same time. It’s a wall of sound that you can feel in your chest!

We encourage our local fans to come out and support us at games in places like Fergus, Maxville, or Cambridge. It’s a great way to see the wider piping community and cheer on your favorite Port Dover band. Just remember to bring a lawn chair, some sunscreen, and a healthy appreciation for the sound of the pipes!
