The Origin Story: Ancient Pipes on Modern Shores

While we’re a proud fixture of Port Dover, Ontario, the bagpipes actually started their journey thousands of years ago in places like Egypt and Rome. It wasn’t until the Romans brought them to Scotland that the “third drone” was added, creating the iconic look and sound we use today. We like to think we’re just the latest chapter in a very long, very loud history.

Bringing that ancient sound to the shores of Lake Erie is what the North Shore Highlanders are all about. It’s a bit of a trip to realize that the same basic instrument played by Emperor Nero is being used to entertain crowds at the Port Dover pier. We take that history seriously, but we try not to let it go to our heads—at least not more than the pipes themselves!

Whether we’re playing a 2,000-year-old melody or a modern fan favorite, we’re bridging the gap between history and our local community. It’s pretty cool to be the keepers of such a massive legacy right here in Norfolk County.
