The “Big Pipe”: Gaelic Roots in Port Dover

In Scottish Gaelic, the bagpipe is called Pìob Mhòr, which literally translates to “The Big Pipe.” It’s an appropriate name, isn’t it? When the North Shore Highlanders strike up in Port Dover, Ontario, there’s nothing small about the sound or the presence we bring to the street.

We love sharing these little bits of Gaelic culture with our neighbors in Norfolk County. Understanding the language behind the music helps us appreciate the “Piobaireachd” (the classical music of the pipes) that we practice during the off-season. It’s about more than just tunes; it’s about a linguistic heritage that still lives on through our fingers.

Next time you hear us, remember you’re listening to the Pìob Mhòr. It’s a big name for a big sound, and we’re proud to be the ones bringing it to life in Port Dover.
