No Sharps, No Flats, No Problem

Did you know the Great Highland Bagpipe only plays nine notes? It’s true! We play from low G to high A, and because we have no sharps or flats, we don’t even need a key signature. For the North Shore Highlanders in Port Dover, Ontario, this simplicity is actually what makes the music so challenging and beautiful.

Because we can’t change our volume or stop the sound (the chanter is never silent), we have to use “grace notes” to create rhythm and separation. It’s like a secret code of finger-flicks that tells the story of the melody. We spend hours in Port Dover perfecting these tiny movements so the music feels dynamic and alive.

It’s amazing what you can do with just nine notes. From soulful laments to high-energy jigs, the Highlanders prove every week that you don’t need a full piano to move an audience in Norfolk County.
