The bagpipe holds a unique, if slightly intimidating, title: it is the only musical instrument in history to ever be classified as a “weapon of war.” Back in the day, pipers led Highland regiments into battle to inspire their friends and terrify their enemies. While we’re much more peaceful in Port Dover, Ontario, that “martial” spirit still echoes in our marches.
In fact, after the Jacobite risings, the pipes were actually banned in Scotland because they were seen as such a powerful symbol of resistance. Pipers were even executed just for owning their instruments. When we play today at the Port Dover Legion, we remember that we are exercising a freedom that our ancestors fought hard to keep.
We don’t use our pipes for battle anymore, but we do use them to command attention. When the North Shore Highlanders march down a Port Dover street, you can still feel that powerful, ancient energy that once moved armies.
