The Drum Major’s Mace: More Than a Stick

When the North Shore Highlanders lead a parade in Port Dover, Ontario, you’ll see our Drum Major at the very front carrying a ceremonial mace. This isn’t just for show—the mace is a communication tool. Different positions of the mace tell the band when to turn, when to start playing, and when to “cut” the music.

Historically, the Drum Major was also the person in charge of the band’s discipline and dress. Today, they are the visual “face” of the band in Norfolk County. It takes a lot of practice to spin and catch that mace while marching in step and keeping a straight face!

If you see our Drum Major give a high signal with the mace, get ready—something big is about to happen. It’s all part of the pageantry that makes the Highlanders such a favorite in Port Dover.
