Bagpipe Lung: Why We Keep it Clean

You might have heard the term “bagpipe lung”—it sounds like a myth, but it’s actually a real thing! Because pipes hold moisture, they can become a breeding ground for fungi if they aren’t cleaned. For the North Shore Highlanders in Port Dover, Ontario, hygiene is just as important as hitting the right notes. We’re all about “safe piping.”

Every member of our band is taught to swab out their chanter and dry their bag after every practice at the Port Dover Legion. It keeps the instrument sounding crisp and, more importantly, keeps the piper healthy. A clean pipe is a happy pipe, and we want our members to stay on their feet for years of parades.

If you ever see us taking our pipes apart after a show, we aren’t just fiddling with the gear. We’re doing the essential maintenance that keeps the Highlanders ready for the next big Norfolk County event.
