One of our favorite tunes to play in Port Dover, Ontario is The Black Bear. It is traditionally the fastest march used by Highland regiments to return to their barracks. It’s famous for the moment where the soldiers (and the audience!) are supposed to give a loud “HOOCH!” or cheer in the middle of the tune.
We love playing this one because it always gets the Port Dover crowds involved. It’s a high-energy, “get home” tune that signals the end of a long day of marching. Even after a tiring parade through Norfolk County, The Black Bear gives us (and the crowd) that final burst of energy.
So, the next time you hear us strike up this lively march, don’t be shy—give us a cheer! It’s all part of the fun of being a North Shore Highlander.
